Wellbeing in menopause

The term "menopause" is also known as the 'change of life'. Menopause typically starts to happen when people turn 40 years, and the average age is 49-50 years. Most people experience some difficulties adjusting to the physical and emotional changes of menopause, and their family may be affected as well.

In fact, people can’t avoid menopause. But they can keep their wellbeing if they take care of themselves properly and constantly.

Many people have the perception that menopause is the last or final menstrual period and occurs to women only. But in fact, both women and men turn to menopause, but women are usually more afraid to enter menopause compared to men.

In the first period, people going into menopause usually have the obviously signs, such as feeling moody, having hot flashes, night sweats, and insomnia. These symptoms are caused by hormonal changes. But some people enter menopause without any symptoms.

The common sign of female menopause is that the menstrual cycle changes, which can be classified into 3 stages as follows:

* The first stage (age 40-45 years), where the menstrual period will come earlier than usual, such as every 3 weeks instead of every month.

* The second stage (age 45-50 years), where the menstrual period will come even later than usual.

* The third stage (age 50 years), where menopause is complete.

Normally, women are born with 1 millions eggs in their ovaries. The normal monthly cycle of female hormones governs ovulation and the menstrual period. When the ovaries run out of functional eggs, the ovulation stops and the female hormones estrogen and progesterone are no longer produced when women turn about 49-50 years.

Female hormones do not only control menstruation, they also control several functions and organs such as temperature, emotionality, mentality, immunity, skin, memory, saliva, taste buds, and the cardiovascular system. It also stimulates bone production to be thick and strong, and prevents blood clots occurring in the brain and heart. That’s why women in their reproductive age are always stronger than men. However, women in menopause have increased risk of osteoporosis, peripheral artery diseases, and hormone deficiency, such as hot flashes, mood swings, irritability, depression, etc.

Therefore, people need to learn how to deal with menopause in order to take care of themselves properly, such as having a good diet, doing regularly exercise, and having annual health check-ups that includes blood pressure, blood sugar, blood lipid, kidney function, liver enzymes, heart check-up, bone density, etc. It is also important to have PAPs smear, a pelvic examination, a transvaginal scan (vaginal ultrasound) every year to check for tumors or cysts, and also take a mammogram to investigate for breast cancer.

In some cases with mood swings, bipolar disorder, depression, severe osteoporosis, a doctor should be consulted to find proper treatment, such as hormonal treatment, osteoporosis healing, or have a calcium, vitamin, or dietary supplement, etc.

If people learn and understand about menopause, they can continue to have wellbeing in their life.
